01The Loop Itself

60 Miles, Historic Highway,
Six Waterfalls Plus Vista House.

The Columbia Gorge scenic-stops loop is a 60-mile round-trip from Portland that runs east on I-84 to the Corbett exit (Exit 22), turns onto the Historic Columbia River Highway west to Vista House at Crown Point, then east through the waterfall corridor on the historic highway. The route covers Vista House, Latourell Falls, Bridal Veil, Wahkeena, Multnomah Falls, and Horsetail Falls before rejoining I-84 west for the return to Portland.

Drive time without stops runs 90 minutes round-trip. With Vista House and six waterfall stops at 10 to 45 minutes each, plus a Cascade Locks lunch, the day fills 6 hours from a 9 a.m. pickup to a 3 p.m. drop. The loop fits family day-trips, photographer outings, out-of-town visitor concierge runs, and corporate hospitality days. For the existing focused Multnomah-only tour, see Columbia Gorge Multnomah Falls private tour.

I-84 east to Corbett

From Portland east on I-84 to Exit 22 at Corbett, 22 miles. Drive time 25 minutes. The route turns onto the Historic Columbia River Highway here and runs west to Crown Point.

Historic Columbia River Highway

Built 1913-22 as the first scenic highway in the US National Register. 24 miles of two-lane road through the waterfall corridor, with stone-arch bridges, basalt-pillar viaducts, and the original tunnel-and-overlook engineering.

The waterfall corridor

Six standing waterfalls between Crown Point and the Multnomah Falls lodge. Latourell, Shepperd's Dell, Bridal Veil, Wahkeena, Multnomah, and Horsetail across roughly 8 miles of the historic highway.

I-84 west return

From Multnomah Falls or Cascade Locks west on I-84 back to Portland. The chauffeur often turns west at the Multnomah Falls I-84 Exit 31 lot for a faster return on full days, or extends to Cascade Locks for a lunch stop on longer days.

02Vista House

700 Ft Above The River
At Crown Point.

Vista House sits at 700 ft above the Columbia River on Crown Point, the easternmost vista of the Historic Columbia River Highway. The 1916 octagonal stone structure was built by the State Highway Commission as an observatory and rest stop, dedicated June 7, 1918. The building now operates as a small museum with the upper observation deck offering 360-degree views east up the Gorge toward Beacon Rock and west toward Portland.

Standing visit runs 10 to 15 minutes for the deck walk and a coffee at the small concession. The chauffeur drops at the curb and waits in the parking circle. Photographers extend to 30 minutes for sunrise or golden-hour shots. Open daily April through October, weekends only November through March. Public context at vistahouse.com.

The 1916 stone structure

Octagonal sandstone structure built 1916-18 by Edgar M. Lazarus. National Register of Historic Places listing 1974. The opal-glass dome and marble floor are the architectural headliners on the lower level.

Upper observation deck

360-degree view from the upper deck. East: the Gorge corridor toward Beacon Rock and Mt Adams. West: the Sandy River delta and Portland skyline on clear days. South: the Cascade foothills.

Lower-level museum

Small museum on the lower level with Highway construction history, Native art from the Cascades tribes, and a small concession with coffee, books, and souvenirs.

Photographer's window

Sunrise (5:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. summer) and golden hour (40 minutes before sunset) face east up the Gorge with Beacon Rock as the focal point. Standing-tripod allowed on the deck.

The Volvo S90 at $110 per hour fits a couple or three riders on the Columbia Gorge scenic loop with the executive lower vehicle profile and trunk cargo.

03The Smaller Falls

Latourell, Bridal Veil,
Wahkeena, Horsetail.

The smaller falls are the part most one-day Multnomah-only visitors miss. Latourell Falls drops 249 ft against a wall of hexagonal basalt columns at Guy W. Talbot State Park, 5 minutes from Vista House. Bridal Veil Falls is a two-tier 120-ft cascade reached by a 0.6-mile round-trip easy trail (best for kids). Wahkeena Falls is a 242-ft chute with a 5-minute roadside view, connecting to the Multnomah Falls upper trail on a 5-mile loop for serious hikers. Horsetail Falls is a 176-ft roadside cascade visible from the highway pullout.

The five-falls scenic stops give a fuller picture of the Gorge waterfall geology than a Multnomah-only stop. Each smaller fall has a different geology: Latourell's basalt columns, Bridal Veil's two-tier cascade, Wahkeena's chute, Horsetail's plunge from a smaller catchment. The Marquee chauffeur waits at the lot or pullout while riders walk the 5-to-15-minute viewing windows. For sibling Gorge experiences, the Oneonta Gorge chauffeur day-trip covers the Oneonta-only walk through the slot canyon.

Latourell Falls (249 ft)

Hexagonal basalt columns frame the 249-ft drop at Guy W. Talbot State Park. Lower viewpoint a 200-ft walk from the parking lot. Upper-loop hike runs 2.5 miles for serious hikers. 10 to 15 minutes standing visit.

Bridal Veil Falls (120 ft)

Two-tier 120-ft cascade reached by a 0.6-mile round-trip easy trail. Bridal Veil State Park. Best for kids on the family day-trip. 20 to 30 minutes standing visit including the trail walk.

Wahkeena Falls (242 ft)

242-ft chute visible from the lower lot. Connects to the Multnomah Falls upper trail on a 5-mile Wahkeena-Multnomah loop. 5-minute roadside view or 5-mile half-day hike for serious hikers.

Horsetail Falls (176 ft)

176-ft roadside plunge visible from the highway pullout. 5-minute photo stop. The Ponytail Falls hike continues 0.4 miles up to a behind-the-falls walkway for serious photographers.

04Multnomah Falls

620 Ft, Two Tiers,
Timed-Entry Permit Required May-Sept.

Multnomah Falls is the second-tallest year-round US waterfall at 620 ft total drop in two tiers (542 ft upper, 69 ft lower, plus a 9-ft cascade above the Benson Bridge). The Forest Service requires a timed-entry permit between approximately Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend, in 30-minute slots between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Permits cost $2 per vehicle and book through Recreation.gov 14 days in advance.

Marquee dispatch books the permit on behalf of the booking and stages the chauffeur to arrive 5 minutes before the slot. Outside the timed-entry window (October through April), the falls run open access. Standing visit runs 30 to 45 minutes for the lower viewpoint, the Benson Bridge walk-up (1,000 ft round-trip on a paved switchback path), and the lodge cafe stop. For the focused Multnomah-only tour, see Columbia Gorge Multnomah Falls private tour.

The 620-ft total drop

Upper falls 542 ft, lower falls 69 ft, plus a 9-ft cascade above the Benson Bridge. Total 620 ft makes Multnomah the second-tallest year-round US waterfall behind Yosemite.

Timed-entry permit (May-Sept)

$2 per vehicle, 30-minute slots between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Booking through Recreation.gov 14 days in advance. Marquee dispatch books on behalf of the chauffeur run.

Benson Bridge walk-up

1,000-ft paved switchback from the lower lot to the Benson Bridge between the upper and lower falls. 200 ft of elevation gain. 20-minute round-trip at family pace.

Multnomah Falls Lodge

Stone lodge built 1925. Restaurant on the lower level with Pacific Northwest fare at $20 to $40 per person. Snack bar at the entry. Restrooms and gift shop. Standard lunch stop on the held-vehicle rate.

05The Manifest

Vehicle Sizing For The
6-Hour Scenic Loop.

The Columbia Gorge scenic loop is a long-haul day-trip outside the Portland metro and carries the 8-hour day-rate minimum on the standard hourly model. Three vehicles fit. The Volvo S90 at $110 per hour fits a couple or three riders. The Cadillac Escalade ESV at $135 per hour fits a family of five or six (the standard family pick). The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter at $165 per hour holds 8 to 14 across an extended family or corporate group.

The Escalade is the standard pick for family bookings because the SUV cabin handles strollers, picnic, and the standing children's hike up to the Multnomah Falls Bridge. The S90 fits the executive couple or photographer day with the lower vehicle profile. The Sprinter is the multi-family pick on a Saturday with two coordinated families and grandparents. For pricing detail, see the Portland chauffeur pricing guide 2026.

Volvo S90 ($110 per hour)

Fits a couple or three riders. 6-hour booking $660, 8-hour day rate $880. Trunk holds picnic and camera gear. Lower vehicle profile and fuel efficiency on the 60-mile loop. Best for executive or photographer day.

Cadillac Escalade ESV ($135 per hour)

Standard family pick. Fits a family of five or six with car seats and strollers. 6-hour booking $810, 8-hour day rate $1,080. Cargo handles picnic and stroller for the Multnomah Falls walk.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter ($165 per hour)

Fits 8 to 14 across multi-family or corporate group. 6-hour booking $990, 8-hour day rate $1,320. Captain's chairs, overhead storage. Single-vehicle removes caravan question on the historic highway.

Held-vehicle hourly rate

Same chauffeur and vehicle from Portland pickup through Vista House, the waterfall corridor, lunch, and the I-84 return. Held-vehicle rate covers every standing-stop wait curbside.

06The Itinerary Pacing

9 A.M. Pickup To 3 P.M. Drop,
Six Hours On The Loop.

The standard 6-hour pacing fits a 9 a.m. pickup to a 3 p.m. drop window. 9 a.m. Portland pickup, 9:25 a.m. Corbett exit, 9:40 a.m. Vista House (15 minutes), 10:05 a.m. Latourell (15 minutes), 10:30 a.m. Bridal Veil (20 minutes), 11 a.m. Wahkeena (10 minutes), 11:15 a.m. Multnomah Falls timed-entry slot (45 minutes), 12 noon Horsetail Falls (10 minutes), 12:15 p.m. Cascade Locks lunch (75 minutes), 1:45 p.m. I-84 west, 3 p.m. Portland drop.

The pacing flexes with the booking. A photographer day extends Vista House to 30 minutes for golden hour and stretches Multnomah to 90 minutes for the upper falls hike, pushing the day to 8 hours. A family with kids cuts the smaller falls and adds time at Bridal Veil's easy trail and the Multnomah lodge cafe. For broader event coordination, see Portland event transportation.

9 a.m. pickup window

9 a.m. pickup from a Portland home or downtown hotel. 25-minute drive to the Corbett exit. Vista House by 9:40 a.m. for the morning light on the Gorge.

11:15 a.m. Multnomah slot

Standard Multnomah Falls timed-entry slot at 11:15 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. lands the lunch window after the falls. The 11 a.m. and noon slots are the most-booked windows on summer weekends.

Cascade Locks lunch

12:15 p.m. arrival at Cascade Locks (10 miles east of Multnomah). 75-minute lunch at Char Burger, Thunder Island Brewing, or the Bridge of the Gods Brewing taproom. The held-vehicle rate covers the lunch wait.

3 p.m. Portland drop

1:45 p.m. departure from Cascade Locks west on I-84. 3 p.m. Portland home or hotel drop. Total 6-hour day. A 9 a.m. pickup avoids the 4 p.m. evening I-84 west traffic build.

07Best Months

March Through November,
Spring Flow Peak, Fall Color.

March through November is the standard scenic window for the Gorge loop. March-May brings spring waterfall flows at peak after the winter snowpack melt. The smaller falls (Latourell, Bridal Veil, Wahkeena) run heavier than summer. June-September brings warmer weather and fuller hike access (timed-entry permit at Multnomah). October brings fall color along the Historic Columbia River Highway with vine maple and big-leaf maple in the canyons.

November-February runs lower waterfall flows but works for cold-weather photographers and a shorter loop without the timed-entry permit. Winter ice-storm closures happen 2 to 3 times per season, posted by ODOT at tripcheck.com. Marquee runs the loop year-round with reroutes on closure days. For sibling cold-weather Gorge bookings, see Portland to Skamania Lodge Gorge day-trip.

March-May spring flow

Snowpack melt drives peak waterfall flows. The smaller falls run heavier than summer. Vista House open daily April onward. Trillium and wildflower bloom along the Latourell trail in late April.

June-September peak season

Timed-entry permit required at Multnomah Falls. Warm weather, full trail access. Crowds peak Friday-Sunday at the Multnomah lodge. Weekday bookings hold lighter traffic.

October fall color

Vine maple and big-leaf maple along the historic highway through the canyons. Mid-October peak color window. Fewer visitors than summer. No timed-entry permit required after Labor Day.

November-February winter loop

Lower waterfall flows but no timed-entry permit. 2 to 3 ice-storm closure days per season. Vista House weekend-only hours. Cold-weather photographers find the lighter traffic worth the trade.

08Lunch And Add-Ons

Cascade Locks, Hood River,
Or Lodge Cafe.

Three lunch options fold into the loop. Multnomah Falls Lodge cafe at the lower viewpoint runs Pacific Northwest fare at $20 to $40 per person, with the falls visible from the dining room window. Cascade Locks adds a 10-minute east drive for Char Burger, Thunder Island Brewing, or Bridge of the Gods Brewing. Hood River adds a 50-mile east extension for Pfriem Family Brewers, Solstice Wood Fire Pizza, or Celilo Restaurant.

The standard scenic-loop pacing works with the Multnomah Lodge cafe or Cascade Locks. Adding Hood River pushes the day to 7 to 8 hours and pairs well with the Hood River Fruit Loop sibling experience. The held-vehicle hourly rate covers the lunch wait curbside in all three patterns. For cross-cluster long-haul, see Mt Hood scenic drive and Portland to Oregon Coast multi-stop.

Multnomah Falls Lodge cafe

Pacific Northwest fare at the 1925 stone lodge. Falls visible from the window. $20 to $40 per person. 60-minute lunch on the held-vehicle rate. Standard pick when the loop ends at Multnomah.

Cascade Locks options

Char Burger riverfront American, Thunder Island Brewing craft brewery with river-view patio, Bridge of the Gods Brewing taproom. $15 to $30 per person. 75-minute lunch with the river view and the Bridge of the Gods photo stop.

Hood River extension

50-mile east extension via I-84. Pfriem Family Brewers waterfront, Celilo Restaurant downtown, Solstice Wood Fire Pizza waterfront. $20 to $50 per person. 90-minute lunch with the Hood River downtown walk.

Hood River Fruit Loop add-on

35-mile orchard and winery loop south of Hood River. Adds 2 hours to the day. Cherries July, peaches August, apples and pears September-October. Pairs with the Hood River lunch option.

09Photo Pacing

Vista House Sunrise,
Multnomah Mid-Day.

Photographer bookings flex the standard 9 a.m. pickup to an earlier 5:30 a.m. or 6 a.m. window for Vista House sunrise. The east-facing deck catches the first light against Beacon Rock at the summer 5:30 a.m. sunrise. Photographers extend Vista House to 30 minutes and Latourell to 25 minutes for the morning calm, then run the waterfall corridor mid-morning when the canyon shade gives the soft light most photographers want for waterfall long-exposure work.

Standard photo equipment fits in any vehicle. Tripod, ND filter set, polarizer, two camera bodies, and weather cover all ride in the trunk. The chauffeur stages curbside while the photographer works the angle. Most photographer bookings run 8 to 9 hours from the sunrise pickup to a late-afternoon return. For broader photographer service patterns, see luxury Oregon wine tours.

Vista House sunrise window

5:30 a.m. summer / 7:30 a.m. winter sunrise faces east up the Gorge with Beacon Rock as the focal point. 30-minute window for the shooting.

Waterfall canyon shade window

9 a.m. to 11 a.m. canyon shade gives soft directional light at the smaller falls. Best window for long-exposure waterfall work with ND filters.

Multnomah mid-day light

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. catches the upper falls in summer sunlight on clear days. The Benson Bridge angle works at this window. Heavy crowds at the lower viewpoint.

Photographer day pacing

5:30 a.m. or 6 a.m. pickup at the downtown hotel, sunrise window at Vista House, canyon-shade waterfall morning across Latourell-Bridal Veil-Wahkeena, mid-day Multnomah on the Benson Bridge, late-afternoon return. 8-to-9-hour day with the held-vehicle rate covering the standing-tripod windows. S90 fits the solo photographer with full kit. Escalade fits the duo with extended kit and tripod cases. Sprinter for a workshop group of 6 to 8 photographers on a coordinated booking.
