This guide follows that pipeline end to end, the signal, the network, the two different meanings of arrived, and shows what a pickup looks like when it runs on the data instead of on a text from baggage claim.

01The Signal
Once Per Second,
By Federal Mandate.
The pipeline begins on the aircraft. ADS-B, in the FAA's own four-part unpacking, is Automatic because it transmits with no pilot involvement, Dependent because position comes from GPS, Surveillance because it fixes three-dimensional position and identity, and Broadcast because anyone with receiving equipment can hear it, once per second, against radar's 5-to-12-second sweeps. It is not optional: 14 CFR 91.225 has required the equipment in Class A and most controlled airspace since January 1, 2020, on the 1090 MHz and 978 MHz frequencies the rule names outright. Every airliner descending toward PDX is narrating its own arrival, every second, to whoever cares to listen.
Why GPS changed everything
Radar asks where is the plane and waits for an echo; ADS-B lets the plane answer continuously from its own navigation system. The FAA now calls real-time ADS-B the preferred surveillance method for air traffic control, and the same feed that separates airliners times your pickup, which is a rather good pedigree for a curb arrival.
The mandate's quiet gift
The 2020 rule was written for air-traffic safety, but its side effect democratized the sky: because Broadcast means unencrypted, a hobbyist antenna on a Lake Oswego roof hears the same once-per-second truth the tower does. Public flight tracking is not a scrape or an estimate; it is the aviation system overheard.
The stragglers, triangulated
Older and military aircraft carrying only Mode S transponders get located anyway: when three or more receivers hear the same signal, multilateration computes position from timing differences, a technique the trackers note is increasingly useful against GPS jamming too. The net catches what the mandate misses.
What one second buys a pickup
Per-second updates mean an early descent, a go-around, or a hold over the Gorge shows up in dispatch's picture as it happens, not when the airline app catches up. The pickup that adjusts ten minutes before you land is reading this feed; the one circling the terminal was reading the ticket.
02The Net

And A Feed From Space.
Between the aircraft and your phone sits the listening infrastructure. FlightAware describes its own plumbing as a worldwide network of over 30,000 terrestrial ADS-B receivers, radar and flight-plan feeds from air navigation providers in 45 countries, airline gate-event data, and Aireon's space-based ADS-B constellation filling the oceans, all fused by an engine evaluating over 10,000 position messages per second. Flightradar24 counts more than 50,000 receivers on seven continents and in space; the volunteer-run ADS-B Exchange runs another 25,000. The forums' verdict on all this, totally legit, relatively accurate, slight display delay, is correct and almost charmingly understated: it is a planetary sensor network, free, in your pocket.
Why multiple sources matter
Receiver networks see position; airline feeds see the gate events receivers cannot, pushback, door-open, the moments that define a pickup. The fusion is the product: position tells you the plane is ten minutes out, the airline feed tells you when it actually docked, and a good pickup consumes both.
Ocean gaps, closed from orbit
Ground receivers end at the coastline, so satellite-hosted ADS-B receivers now relay mid-ocean positions at least once per minute, which is why an arrival from Tokyo tracks continuously into PDX rather than vanishing for nine hours. The international pickup inherits the same certainty as the Seattle shuttle.
The friend-tracking etiquette
The perennial question, can I track a flight by passenger name, answers itself correctly: no, manifests are private, and the flight number is the whole key. One text at booking time, Alaska 351 on Thursday, and the pipeline handles the rest of the relationship without anyone reporting their whereabouts from a jet bridge.
The delay caveat, sized honestly
Public displays lag the raw feed by moments, the forum caveat is real, and none of it matters at pickup scale: the decisions a curb arrival needs, descent started, landed, taxiing long, resolve in minutes, not seconds. The pipeline's precision exceeds the problem, which is exactly what you want from infrastructure.

03The Times
Landed Is Not Arrived,
And The Gap Has A Name.
Here is the reading skill that separates tracking users from tracking readers. Aviation logs four timestamps per flight, out, off, on, in: gate departure, wheels up, wheels down, gate arrival. FlightAware's own FAQ explains that commercial flights display gate times while general aviation shows runway times, and warns that at large airports there can be a significant difference in gate and runway times due to long taxi times and delays on the ground. The federal government's last hub-size taxi study put large-hub taxi-in near eight minutes on average, and the spread is the point: the forum thread asking whether arrival time means landed or at the gate exists because families keep leaving for the curb at on and waiting through in, plus baggage, plus the walk. The plane arriving twice is not a bug; budgeting for only one of them is.

The four-letter vocabulary

Why texts still fail

Is it possible to track a flight using a passenger's name?
No, and be glad: passenger manifests are private, so no public tracker connects a name to a seat. What you track is the flight itself, airline and flight number, which the traveler shares in one text at booking. From that point the aircraft's own broadcasts do the reporting, which is why our booking form asks for the flight number and never needs to ask where are you now.
Is there a way to track a flight in real time?
Several, free, in your pocket: FlightAware, Flightradar24, and the independent ADS-B Exchange all render live positions from receiver networks in the tens of thousands. The subtlety is reading them correctly, landed means wheels on runway, not passenger at curb, and the gap between those two events is taxi time plus deplaning.
