The Grotto Festival of Lights Chauffeur Viewing Guide.

Seventy acres at NE 85th and Sandy Boulevard, the day after Thanksgiving through December 30, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. nightly. Two levels divided by a 110-foot basalt cliff, an elevator between them, more than a million coordinated bulbs, and holiday concerts in the upper Meditation Chapel on weekend evenings. Lower level (chapel, rock cave, crèche) is free. Upper-level lights walk runs $14 per adult on the 2025 schedule with timed-entry tickets. The on-site lot fills 5:30 to 7:30 most weekend evenings. The Marquee fix is a drop at the loop drive off NE 85th. The chauffeur stages on Sandy Boulevard or the Madison High lot, the family walks both levels at their own pace, and the same booking folds in Peacock Lane, ZooLights, a Christmas Eve midnight mass at St. Mary's Cathedral, or a Hollywood District dinner without resetting a fresh ride.

Last updated: April 21, 2026

Bottom line: Festival runs Thanksgiving through December 30, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. nightly, at 8840 NE Skidmore Street near NE 85th and Sandy Boulevard. Lower-level chapel, rock cave with the Pieta, and outdoor crèche stay free. Upper-level walk (lit gardens, Meditation Chapel, cliff overlook) is $14 per adult on the 2025 schedule with timed-entry tickets. Main lot fills 5:30 to 7:30 most weekend evenings, so the drop-and-loop at the NE 85th loop drive handles it: family out at the main entrance, chauffeur holds on Sandy Boulevard or the Madison High lot until they text. Volvo S90 at $110/hr fits a single family. Escalade ESV at $135/hr fits six on the multi-stop pairing. Sprinter at $165/hr fits 8 to 14 across The Grotto, Peacock Lane, ZooLights, and a Christmas Eve midnight mass in one booking. For the broader holiday pattern, see Christmas town car service.

01The Shrine

Seventy Acres, Two Levels,
A 110-Foot Cliff Between Them.

The Grotto is the National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, a Catholic shrine founded in 1924 at 8840 NE Skidmore Street, NE 85th and Sandy Boulevard. The 70-acre property splits across two levels divided by a 110-foot basalt cliff. Lower level holds the rock cave with the Pieta carved into the cliff face, the outdoor crèche, the chapel, and the votive candles. Upper level holds the Meditation Chapel (1991), a glass-walled sanctuary facing Mount St. Helens, plus the Stations of the Cross and the rose garden. An elevator moves between the two in 30 seconds.

During the festival, both levels light up with more than a million coordinated bulbs. Holiday concerts run in the upper Meditation Chapel on weekend evenings. The lower level hosts the live nativity and the Christmas Eve bonfire. Official info at thegrotto.org. Seasonal context at travelportland.com.

The 1924 founding

The Servite Friars established the shrine in 1924 with the rock cave as the central devotional space. The carved Pieta copies the Michelangelo original at St. Peter's Basilica. Continuous Catholic services since dedication.

The Meditation Chapel of 1991

Glass-walled sanctuary with floor-to-ceiling east-facing windows. Mount St. Helens reads cleanly on a clear day. Hosts the festival concerts Saturday and Sunday evenings, about 250 first-come bench seats inside.

The geometry of the visit

Lower level at street grade, paved, free. Upper level above the cliff, 62 acres, $14 adult ticket. Elevator between. Most families do 20 to 30 minutes lower, then 40 to 60 on the upper trail.

Why the chauffeur fits

Parking first: the 200-space lot fills 5:30 to 7:30 weekends, with overflow at Madison High two blocks south. Multi-stop pairing second: one booking covers The Grotto, Peacock Lane, ZooLights, a midnight mass, or a closing dinner without three rideshare resets.

The Cadillac Escalade ESV at $135 per hour fits a family of six on The Grotto and the multi-stop pairing across Peacock Lane, ZooLights, and a Christmas Eve midnight mass.

02Festival Dates and Ticketing

Thanksgiving Through December 30,
$14 Per Adult For The Upper Walk.

The 2025 festival opens the day after Thanksgiving and runs nightly through December 30, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., last entry 30 minutes before close. Christmas Eve shifts to the midnight mass schedule with lights dimmed earlier. Lower-level access (rock cave, crèche, chapel, gift shop) stays free.

The upper-level walk requires a timed-entry ticket: $14 per adult, $9 per child age 3 to 11, free under 3 on the 2025 schedule. Tickets at the door and online at thegrotto.org. Reservation is the better call December 18 to 24 when walk-up lines stretch to 30 minutes. The held-vehicle hourly rate covers the wait either way. For booking, see book Portland chauffeur service.

Free lower-level admission

Rock cave, outdoor crèche, chapel running continuous services, and gift shop all open without a ticket. A family on a budget can do the lower visit, see the festival lights from the lower plaza, and skip the upper walk.

Upper-level ticket pricing

$14 adult, $9 child age 3 to 11, free under 3 on the 2025 schedule. Ticket covers the lit walking trail, the Meditation Chapel, the Stations of the Cross, the rose garden, and any concert that night on first-come seating.

Timed-entry windows

Thirty-minute windows from 5 p.m. through 9:30 p.m. Pre-purchase at thegrotto.org locks the slot. Walk-up at the main entrance booth. December 18 to 24 weekends, the walk-up line stretches to 30 minutes, so pre-purchase is the cleaner call.

Christmas Eve schedule

Lower-level live nativity from 7 p.m., bonfire on the lower plaza, lights dim around 9 p.m. for the midnight mass shift in the lower chapel. The midnight mass itself is one of the most-attended Catholic services in Portland.

03Lower vs Upper Level

One Free Plaza At Street Grade,
One Ticketed Walk Above The Cliff.

The visit splits cleanly. Lower level first, free, at street grade. The rock cave anchors the visit; the outdoor crèche reads from across the plaza; the chapel runs continuous services for prayer; the gift shop and votive candles round out the level. Twenty to 30 minutes is the typical pace.

The elevator moves to the cliff top in 30 seconds. The upper level ($14 adult ticket) runs the lit walking trail through 62 acres, the Meditation Chapel, the Stations of the Cross along wooded paths, and the cliff-edge overlook to Mount St. Helens on a clear night. Concerts run on a posted schedule. Forty to 60 minutes typical, longer if a concert lands in the window.

The rock cave and the Pieta

Original devotional space from the 1924 founding at the base of the cliff. Votive candles line the lower plaza around the cave. Many visits start with the lower-level prayer stop before the lit upper walk.

The outdoor crèche on the lower plaza

Life-sized figures, covered nativity setting, lit through the festival. Families with young children often spend more time here than anywhere else on the lower level, especially on Christmas Eve when the live-nativity actors fill in the scene.

The upper Meditation Chapel

East-facing glass walls. Mount St. Helens reads on a clear evening. About 250 first-come bench seats inside. Concerts Saturday and Sunday evenings. One of the quieter spaces in Portland on a December evening.

The Stations of the Cross

Fourteen stations along the wooded upper paths, lit through the festival. The standard loop runs about 20 minutes start to finish. Some deeper stations branch off short gravel offshoots, but the main loop stays paved.

04Parking and Drop

The On-Site Lot Fills By 5:30,
The Drop-And-Loop Sidesteps It.

The on-site lot is free, about 200 spaces at the main entrance off NE 85th, and fills 5:30 to 7:30 most weekend evenings, with overflow at Madison High two blocks south. Madison adds a 5-to-7-minute walk down NE 85th, fine dry, rough wet. Self-parking December 18 to 24 weekends means arriving before 5:30 or after 8:30 to land a main-lot spot.

A Marquee drop at the loop drive off NE 85th takes the parking question off the table. The vehicle pulls into the loop, the family steps out at the main entrance, the chauffeur exits to Sandy Boulevard. Staging on the Sandy shoulder a few blocks west, at Madison High, or at the McDonalds at NE 82nd and Sandy on a longer wait. Pickup at the same drop point on the family's text. See Christmas town car service.

The on-site lot

Free, about 200 spaces, at the main entrance off NE 85th. Fills 5:30 to 7:30 weekend evenings, empties after 9 p.m. as early-arrival families leave. Self-park families who plan ahead land a spot before 5:30 or after 8:30 with reasonable odds.

Madison High overflow

Madison High at NE 82nd and Stark opens its lot for festival overflow on weekend evenings. Five-to-seven-minute walk back up NE 85th. Reasonable dry, rough with kids and a stroller in cold rain. Festival staff direct overflow on peak nights.

The drop point

Loop drive off NE 85th, in front of the main entrance. Wide enough for the Sprinter, sheltered enough that the family steps out under the roofed entry on a wet night. The chauffeur waits in the loop while the family clears, then exits to NE 85th and Sandy.

The staging holds

Three options. Sandy Boulevard shoulder a few blocks west for a 5-minute hold. Madison High lot two blocks south for 30 to 60 minutes. McDonalds at NE 82nd and Sandy for a longer hold with bathroom access on a 90-minute concert wait.

05The Manifest

Vehicle Sizing For Family,
Multi-Family, And Parish Bookings.

Three vehicle profiles by family size and stop count. The Volvo S90 at $110 per hour with a 2-hour minimum fits three or four on a focused Grotto evening with one optional pairing. The Cadillac Escalade ESV at $135 per hour fits five or six with car seats and a stroller across The Grotto, Peacock Lane, and ZooLights. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter at $165 per hour holds 8 to 14 with captain's chairs for multi-family, extended-family, or parish-group bookings on a 4-to-5-hour evening. The held-vehicle rate covers wait time at every stop with the same chauffeur from pickup to final drop. See the Portland chauffeur pricing guide 2026.

Volvo S90 ($110 per hour)

Family of three or four on a focused Grotto evening with one other stop. Home to The Grotto, then to Peacock Lane or a closing dinner, then home inside a 3-hour window at the 2-hour minimum of $220. Trunk holds a stroller or two folded chairs.

Cadillac Escalade ESV ($135 per hour)

Family of five or six with car seats and a stroller. A family-of-six booking runs The Grotto, Peacock Lane, and ZooLights inside a 4-hour window at $540 plus 20 percent gratuity. Captain's chairs hold child seats. Cargo takes a folded power chair for a grandparent.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter ($165 per hour)

Multi-family of 8 to 14, parish group, or extended family on the full holiday-lights itinerary in one vehicle. A 12-passenger booking across two families runs The Grotto, Peacock Lane, ZooLights, and a Christmas Eve midnight mass inside a 5-hour window at $825 plus 20 percent gratuity.

Booking the held-vehicle rate

Covers the wait at every stop inside one booking. Same chauffeur from pickup to final drop. Most multi-stop bookings come in at 4 to 5 hours, from a 5 p.m. pickup to a 10 p.m. or midnight drop depending on the pairing.

06Holiday Concerts

Saturday And Sunday Evenings,
Inside The Meditation Chapel.

Concerts run Saturday and Sunday evenings throughout the festival inside the upper Meditation Chapel, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., sets of 30 to 45 minutes between intermissions. Choirs from area Catholic schools, regional church groups, and Portland choral ensembles rotate through. Repertoire ranges from traditional carols to classical sacred music to Lessons-and-Carols closer to Christmas.

Upper-level tickets include the concerts that night on first-come seating. The chapel holds about 250. Posted schedule at thegrotto.org; arrive 20 to 30 minutes before set time on a popular weekend night. The chauffeur stages on the held-vehicle rate during the concert window. A Grotto concert plus a Christmas Eve midnight mass at St. Mary's Cathedral or another downtown parish runs on a single booking. See night on the town.

Concert times and sets

Saturday and Sunday evenings, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sets of 30 to 45 minutes with short intermissions. Posted schedule at thegrotto.org. Some Friday evenings closer to Christmas add a third concert night.

Choirs on the rotation

Central Catholic, La Salle, St. Mary's Academy, and other Portland Catholic schools rotate through. Regional church groups, the Portland Symphonic Choir on select dates, and smaller ensembles fill the remaining slots. Sacred-classical repertoire with traditional carols folded in.

Seating and arrival timing

First-come bench seating, about 250 seats. On a popular weekend night the chapel fills 15 minutes before set time, so a 20-to-30-minute early arrival lands the seat. Front-row handicapped-access pews hold for guests with mobility aids.

Pairing with midnight mass

A Christmas Eve booking can run a 6 p.m. Grotto concert, the lower-level live nativity at 8 p.m., and midnight mass at St. Mary's Cathedral on NW 18th and Davis on a single Sprinter or Escalade. Same chauffeur from pickup to drop. Closing leg on the standard hourly rate through 1 a.m.

07The Multi-Stop Itinerary

The Grotto, Peacock Lane,
And ZooLights On One Booking.

The Grotto pairs with two other Portland Christmas traditions on a single evening. Standard pairing: Peacock Lane (30-to-45-minute walk through the Tudor block), The Grotto (60 to 90 minutes lower plus upper), ZooLights at the Oregon Zoo (90 minutes to 2 hours including the train ride). Order can flip based on dispatch and traffic.

Peacock Lane to The Grotto is 12 to 15 minutes north on SE 39th and Sandy. The Grotto to ZooLights is 25 to 30 minutes west on Sandy, across the Burnside Bridge, up to Washington Park. A 4-to-5-hour Sprinter booking starting at 5 p.m. covers all three stops on the held-vehicle rate. For a daytime add-on, Pittock Mansion holiday tours fit Saturday afternoons. See Christmas town car service.

Peacock Lane in southeast Portland

One block of Tudor-style houses lit December 15 through 31 between SE Stark and SE Belmont. Walk-only December 15 through 17 with cocoa stand and carolers. Slow drive-through December 18 through 31. Walk takes 30 to 45 minutes. Twelve-to-fifteen-minute transit to The Grotto north on SE 39th and Sandy.

ZooLights at the Oregon Zoo

Nightly into early January in Washington Park. The train ride through the lit tunnels is the part the kids talk about on the way home. Walking path runs 90 minutes to 2 hours. Twenty-five-to-thirty-minute transit from The Grotto west on Sandy and across the Burnside Bridge.

Pittock Mansion daytime tour

December holiday tours with the historic interior decorated by Portland-area garden clubs and design firms. Daytime hours make Pittock a Saturday-afternoon stop ahead of an evening Grotto run. Twenty-five-to-thirty-minute transit south on I-205 and west across the Fremont Bridge.

Order of operations

Most bookings start at Peacock Lane around 5 p.m. or 5:30 p.m., transit to The Grotto for 6:30 to 8 p.m. with a concert on a weekend, and close at ZooLights between 8:30 and 10 p.m. Dispatch can flip the order based on traffic.

08Restaurant Pairing

Hollywood District, Pearl District,
And The Christmas Eve Schedule.

Most Grotto bookings tuck in a meal. From The Grotto south on NE 82nd is a 5-to-10-minute transit to Hollywood District restaurants on NE Sandy. Pizza Jerk on NE Fremont, Laurelhurst Market on East Burnside, and Tasty n Daughters on SE Division all sit within 15-to-20-minute transit and work for a pre- or post-light meal. The chauffeur stages curbside on the held-vehicle rate.

For Sprinter and parish-group bookings, Andina in the Pearl, Higgins on SW Broadway, and Jake's Famous Crawfish handle reservations of 8 to 14. Christmas Eve, restaurants close earlier; reservations land before 6 p.m. or after midnight mass for late seating. For inbound coordination from the airport, see PDX airport car service.

Hollywood District casual

Five-to-ten-minute transit south on NE 82nd. Pizza Jerk on NE Fremont, the Hollywood theater food truck pod, and casual sit-downs along NE Sandy fit a family of four to six. Closing dessert at Salt and Straw on NE Alberta runs another 8 minutes.

Inner-east Portland sit-down

Laurelhurst Market on East Burnside and Tasty n Daughters on SE Division sit within 15-to-20-minute transit and handle a sit-down for four to eight. Chauffeur stages curbside on the held-vehicle rate. Reservations are the right call on weekend evenings.

Pearl District group reservations

Andina in the Pearl, Higgins on SW Broadway, and Jake's Famous Crawfish handle reservations of 8 to 14 on a Sprinter booking. Twenty-five-to-thirty-minute transit across the Burnside Bridge. Reservation 2 hours pre-Grotto or 1 hour post-Grotto fits the booking shape.

Christmas Eve restaurant timing

Most Portland restaurants close by 8 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Reservations land before 6 p.m. pre-Grotto, or after midnight for the late-night kitchens that stay open through the midnight mass crowd. The chauffeur coordinates timing on a single booking.

09Accessibility

Wheelchair Access, Walkers,
And Elderly-Guest Viewing.

The Grotto handles accessibility better than most Portland holiday venues. Lower level at street grade, paved and flat. Wheelchairs, walkers, canes, and standard strollers roll through with no surface transitions. Chapel and gift shop both have wheelchair access. The elevator moves between levels in 30 seconds and fits a power wheelchair, folded scooter, or stroller.

The upper-level trail is paved and lit, with grades below ADA slope limits across most of the 62-acre loop. Meditation Chapel, rose garden, and cliff overlook all sit on accessible paths. Bench seating along the trail gives rest stops. A few deeper Stations of the Cross branch onto short gravel offshoots that are walkable but harder for wheelchairs. Mention the access requirement at booking. The chauffeur handles wheelchair load and unload at the curb; the Escalade ESV cargo holds a folded power chair; the Sprinter cabin sits at a comfortable entry height for elderly guests.

Lower-level wheelchair access

Paved and flat plaza at street grade. Wheelchairs roll to the rock cave, crèche, chapel, and gift shop without surface transitions. Designated handicapped spaces in the main lot near the entry. Chapel front pews hold for mobility-aided guests.

The elevator to the upper level

Inside the main building. Thirty seconds to the cliff top. Fits a power wheelchair, folded mobility scooter, or standard stroller. Operates throughout festival hours with staff available to assist. Drops at the upper-trail entry near the Meditation Chapel.

Upper-trail accessibility

Paved and lit paths with grades below ADA slope limits across most of the 62-acre loop. Meditation Chapel, rose garden, and cliff overlook all sit on accessible paths. Bench seating along the trail. A few deeper Stations branch onto short gravel offshoots, but the main loop stays paved.

Comparison to other holiday venues

Better than Peacock Lane, where residential sidewalks have inconsistent curb cuts. Better than ZooLights, with uphill and uneven zoo paths. Better than the Christmas Ships parade riverfront viewpoints. For an elderly visitor or a wheelchair user, the Grotto is the right anchor stop.
